“First Lutheran Church of Red Wing”

Completed in 1893, at a cost of less than $30,000.00 Red Wing’s First Lutheran Church is the first in a series of the historic Red Wing churches Bill intends to illustrate and paint. There is a story that the original architectural drawings for this church proposed a rather simple exterior with little ornamentation, sans its hand carved limestone, decorative woodwork, and cupolas. It is not known whether the craftsmen took it upon themselves as a group or whether there was a key figure who proposed the changes, but what is known is that the finished product produced by that era’s craftsmen was truly architectural excellence.
