Washington Street in Saint Paul

Saint Paul, Minnesota - Oil on Canvas - 2006

This winter scene captures a view along Washington Street looking towards the heart of downtown. On the right is the Saint Paul Public Library - 1917. Beyond is Rice Park - one of the great public squares in America. It was designated a park on a city plat filed in 1849 by Henry M. Rice and John R. Irvine. Rising beyond Rice Park is Landmark Center. Completed in 1901, it was originally the Federal Courts Building and Post Office for the upper Midwest for many years. Behind Landmark Center is Wells Fargo Center, to the left is the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts and with the sun reflecting off its glass façade is the ECOLAB Building. An architectural writer and admirer of Saint Paul once wrote - there is a sense that the past still exists in Saint Paul, a compliment which perfectly captures the essence of this city.
