Lake Harriet Bandshell I

Minneapolis, Minnesota - Pen and Ink - 2008

Lake Harriet is one of Minneapolis’ five famed ‘chain of lakes’ in the southern part of the city. This lake is named after Harriet Lovejoy, wife of Colonel Leavenworth, who came to Minnesota’s Fort Snelling in 1819. This band shell, completed in 1986, has features reminiscent of its predecessors going back to 1888 when the first music pavilion was built on this site. A 1900 era streetcar still runs between Lake Harriet and nearby Lake Calhoun. From 1988 until 1992, the artist lived five blocks from this lake. In the evening, he would often walk his two dogs down to its shores and around its three-mile circumference. He found winter night-time, when fewer people were out, even more appealing when he and his companions would go out into the center of its frozen expanse to enjoy the solitude.
