James J. Hill House II

Saint Paul, Minnesota - Pen and Ink - 2010

The rugged red sandstone, massive scale, fine detail and ingenious for time mechanical systems of this mansion recall the powerful presence of Saint Paul’s famed railroad magnate, James J. Hill (1838-1916). Completed in 1891, the true landmark residence was the setting of the public and private lives of the Hill family for three decades. His home was the largest residence on Summit Avenue, in the city, the state and the region at the time. It contains 36,500 square feet on five floors including 13 bathrooms, 22 fireplaces, 16 cut-glass chandeliers, a two-story sky-lit art gallery, an 88-foot reception hall, and a profusion of elaborately carved oak and mahogany woodwork.’ Overlooking downtown Saint Paul to the east and Mississippi river valley to the south, the James J. Hill mansion is prominently located at the beginning of Saint Paul’s famed Summit Avenue across from the Cathedral of Saint Paul.
